Release of the Skills in Demand Visa and Core Skills Occupations List

On 07 Dec 2024 the Skills in Demand (SID) visa replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa with the objective of simplifying employer-sponsorship and pathways to permanent residency for skilled migrants.

Here is a snapshot of the significant changes:

·         The SID visa has three streams, being the Specialist Skills stream, the Core Skills stream and the Labour Agreement stream;

·         A new occupations list, called the Core Skills Occupations List (CSOL) has been introduced for the Core Skills stream and also the 186 ENS (direct entry) visa, informed by labour market analysis and stakeholder consultations by Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) that provides access to temporary skilled migration for 456 occupations; and

·         Only one year of relevant work experience is required, reduced from the previous minimum requirement of two years.

Although some occupations have been removed from the CSOL, such as Café or Restaurant Manager, we have seen a broadening of opportunities for 186 ENS (direct entry stream) visa applicants as the CSOL has replaced the shorter occupations list formerly known as the MLTSSL.
